Leave of Absence
If a student wants to take a Leave of Absence (LOA) they must notify their advisor, and fill out a Leave of Absence form and return it to the COS Program Manager, Connie Herold.
The COS Program Manager will then notify Helen Higgins of any changes in the student status, and forward all paperwork to the HUB for processing.
In general, leaves of absence should not be taken until after the thesis proposal has been approved and the student is ABD.
Exceptions for health reasons are always acceptable.
When the student wishes to return from a Leave of Absence, the student needs to fill out a Return from a Leave of Absence form and contact both his advisor, and and COS Program Manager.
The COS Program Manager will contact the Director of the COS Ph.D. Program and see if the student is allowed re-admission. Assuming the student is re-admitted,
the COS Program Manager will notify Helen, and send the paper work to the HUB for processing.
A Leave of Absence is typically granted for one year. During that year the student
should stay in contact with the advisor. Before returning, the student should discuss with the advisor available funding. If the student needs longer than a year, that should be
discussed with the student's advisor and the head of the COS Ph.D. Program informed.
In general, students are automatically re-admitted from a leave of absence. However, if the Leave of Absence extends beyond one year and/or the student took the leave of absence while
in Poor Standing there may be conditions that need to be met to be re-admitted.
